In this episode, Fredrik Erixon talks to Dr Joan Barata about emerging European regulations affecting speech and political discourse. They discuss recent legislation such as the Digital Services Act, the Media Act and their impact on digital platforms and freedom of political speech.
Dr Joan Barata is Senior Legal Fellow at the Future of Free Speech project at Justitia and an international expert in freedom of expression, media freedom and media regulation. Joan has worked on the relationship between freedoms and emerging digital and media regulation. He is regularly involved in projects with international organizations such as UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the Organization of American States and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, where he was the principal advisor to the Representative on Media Freedom. Joan Barata also has experience as a regulator, as he was Secretary General of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia in Spain and was a member of the Permanent Secretariat of the Mediterranean Network of Regulatory Authorities.
