ECIPE Webinar: Tackling Deforestation: What Role for Trade Policy?
This event is part of the EU-Mercosur Project.
In our second event of a series of activities that ECIPE is organising to stimulate discussion around the EU-Mercosur agreement, we will be tackling the thorny interaction between deforestation and trade.
At a time at which Europeans are calling on governments to prioritise climatic and environmental considerations, there is a growing feeling that the trade deal with Mercosur runs against the priorities of the Green Deal. The Trade and Sustainable Development chapter of the agreement sets out provisions on deforestation yet there are subsisting doubts surrounding enforcement mechanisms, to the extent that the EU has now indicated that it will seek to negotiate an additional instrument.
This panel discussion will seek to analyse the interaction between trade policy and deforestation. How is the EU deploying its green diplomacy to influence environmental policies outside of the Union? What are the main drivers of deforestation in the Mercosur region? Can a preferential trade agreement effectively tackle embedded deforestation? What role can technology and innovation play in enhancing supply chain transparency?
